About Taj Yoga

Taj Yoga is part of a thriving movement community located within the old Crown Hill Elementary School building. In a joyous “crossover,” the yoga teacher is taking class down the hall with the Wassa Dance teacher, the ballet kids want to take yoga, and the custodian is studying Flamenco!

I created Taj Yoga as a studio for independent yoga professionals. My colleagues are strong, qualified teachers who have control of their own businesses. As independent contractors, teachers are paid directly by the student. Class cards are redeemable exclusively with that teacher.Urdhva Vasista

Yoga for rehab, rehab from yoga

“Yoga is a pneumatic tool”, states yoga master BKS Iyengar. “It can be used for good, it can be used to harm.” The benefits of yoga for people of all walks of life are innumerable. However, as yoga has proliferated, yoga-related injuries have risen at an alarming rate. Many students come to Taj Yoga seeking sound technical advice. Safety is one of our primary goals: high quality classes for the novice to the expert or professional are offered with the intent to adapt the practice to the individual, making yoga safe and accessible to all.

The studio is also home to Pacific Yoga Teacher Training (formerly known as the Yoga Tree Teacher Training). This program began as a collaborative effort between myself and Kathryn Payne in 1997 and we are currently in our 13th certificate program. It is with great curiosity and intention that Kathryn and I tune this program to the evolving student landscape, always asking ourselves: how do we learn and what are we trying to teach?

Finally, a word about the name. “The Taj” was a working title I used before I found the studio location. I liked the feeling of whimsical grandeur that it imparted because I thought “Taj” meant “palace”. Turns out it means “crown”. It was not until after the lease was signed at Crown Hill Elementary School that I realized the happy coincidence between fantasy and location. Thus, “The Taj” became “Taj Yoga”.
